Beverly Owens-Jackson Certified for Cleveland City Council Ward 5 Primary Ballot

CLEVELAND, OH — The campaign to bring strong, community-focused leadership to Cleveland’s Ward 5 took a major step forward this week, as the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections officially certified Beverly Owens-Jackson for the September 9 primary ballot for City Council. Owens-Jackson filed her petitions on June 11 and will now appear as a candidate seeking to replace current Councilmember Richard Starr.

A longtime community advocate, Owens-Jackson is running to bring new energy and accountability to City Hall, with a platform centered on food access, affordable and sustainable housing, public safety, and strong, values-driven leadership.

“Together, we worked to secure our spot on the ballot. And together, we will rebuild Ward 5,” said Owens-Jackson. “This campaign is about more than one person—it’s about all of us who believe in restoring respect, opportunity, and a true sense of community.”

A survivor of addiction, domestic abuse, and homelessness, Owens-Jackson has spent decades serving others—as a mentor, a labor leader, and the founder of CHOICES, a support group for African American students. She currently serves as an executive leader with SEIU 1199 and has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Humanitarian Award from the National Action Network and the Community Champion Award from Cuyahoga Community College.

With her place on the ballot secured, Owens-Jackson and her team are focused on continuing to meet voters, build support, and offer real solutions to some of Ward 5’s most urgent challenges. The top two finishers in the September 9 primary will advance to the General Election on November 4.
